Frequently asked questions

Common questions about handyman insurance costs in the UK.

Is public liability insurance a legal requirement for handymen in the UK?

Public liability insurance is not a legal requirement for sole-trader handymen in the UK, but it is effectively mandatory in practice. Most letting agents, property managers, housing associations, and local authorities will not permit you on site without a valid PLI certificate showing at least £1m–£2m cover. Many domestic customers also ask to see it before work begins. Without cover, you are personally liable for any accidental damage or injury — a single claim can run into tens of thousands of pounds.

How much does public liability insurance cost for a handyman in the UK?

For a sole-trader handyman doing general residential repairs in the UK, public liability insurance typically costs £100–£250 per year for £1m cover and £150–£350 per year for £2m cover. Costs rise with turnover, higher-risk trades (e.g. minor electrical or plumbing), and claims history. Multi-trade operators or those with employees can expect premiums of £300–£800+ per year when employers' liability is included. Use the calculator above for a personalised estimate.

What is the difference between public liability and employers' liability insurance?

Public liability insurance covers claims from third parties — clients, members of the public, or neighbouring properties — for accidental injury or property damage caused by your work. Employers' liability insurance covers claims from your own employees if they are injured or become ill as a result of working for you. Employers' liability is a legal requirement in the UK if you employ anyone, including part-time, casual, or subcontract workers on your payroll. Fines for non-compliance reach £2,500 per day.

Does handyman insurance cover tools and equipment?

Standard public liability insurance does not cover your tools and equipment — it only covers third-party claims. To protect your tools you need a separate tools and equipment policy (sometimes called 'tools in transit' cover). This covers theft from a van, loss, and accidental damage. Tool cover for a typical handyman's kit costs £80–£200 per year depending on the declared value. Many insurers offer a combined tradesman policy bundling PLI, tools, and personal accident cover.

Can I get handyman insurance for just one day?

Yes — several UK insurers offer short-term or day-rate tradesman insurance. This is useful for occasional or one-off jobs where you do not work as a tradesman full-time. Day policies typically start from £10–£25 for basic PLI. However, if you work as a handyman regularly (even part-time), an annual policy is almost always cheaper and avoids the administrative burden of buying cover job by job.

Does my home insurance or van insurance cover me for handyman work?

No. Standard home insurance and personal motor or van insurance policies explicitly exclude commercial trading activities. If you use your van for work and make a claim, your insurer can void the policy if they discover it was used for trade purposes without a commercial vehicle or hire and reward endorsement. Similarly, domestic contents insurance will not cover tools used for business. You need dedicated tradesman insurance for your work activities.
