Classic layout— Builders, general contractors, larger domestic and commercial jobs
The Classic layout uses a traditional header with your company details on the left and invoice reference on the right, followed by a formal line-item table. It looks the most established and corporate — ideal if you work on larger projects where the client is a property developer, facilities manager, or commercial operator who expects formal documentation.
Modern layout— Electricians, plumbers, gas engineers, HVAC technicians
The Modern layout uses a sidebar accent colour to separate the company header from the invoice body, giving a clean two-column feel. It reads as professional without being stuffy. Works well for certified trades where you want to display your Gas Safe, NICEIC, or NAPIT registration number prominently alongside your company branding.
Minimal layout— Painters, decorators, landscapers, handymen, plasterers
The Minimal layout strips everything back to clean white space and subtle dividers. There are no heavy borders or colour blocks — just clear typography and logical structure. This works particularly well for trades where the finished work speaks for itself and you want an invoice that feels effortless rather than corporate.
Bold layout— Tilers, roofers, carpenters, newer trades businesses
The Bold layout uses strong colour blocks and high contrast to make your invoice memorable. If you want customers to remember your brand — especially if you're building a newer business and want to stand out against established competitors — the Bold templates make an impression. What should a UK tradesman invoice include?
HMRC requires self-employed tradesmen to include certain information on every invoice: your name and address (or business name), a unique invoice number, the date of issue, a description of the goods or services, the amount charged, and — if you're VAT registered — your VAT number and the amount of VAT charged.
All four layout styles include fields for each of these requirements. The VAT row is pre-formatted so you can fill it in if applicable or leave it blank if you're under the VAT threshold (currently £90,000 turnover).
How to fill in a tradesman invoice
Takes about 5 minutes once you have your template.

Add your company details
Your company name, address, phone number, email, and VAT number (if registered) go in the From section at the top.

Add a unique invoice number and date
Give it a sequential number (e.g. INV-0001) and enter today's date. Add a due date — 30 days is standard for UK trades.

Enter the client's details
The client's name, company (if applicable), address, and email go in the Bill To section.

List the work and materials
Describe each job or material in the line items table with quantities, unit prices, and row totals.

Calculate subtotal, VAT, and total
Sum the line items for the subtotal. Add 20% VAT if you are VAT registered, then add both for the total amount due.

Add payment details and send
Include your bank account number and sort code (or preferred payment method) in the notes. Email or post the invoice to the client.
